And it looks like it will be for a very long time! Cody and Norman have been putting in their preference points to go elk hunting for twelve years. They finally were drawn this year, and we have been living, breathing, preparing, researching, re-preparing, etc.. since at least August. They finally went this past week. They were both so excited! This was Cody's first time to go, and I had been giving him a hard time about the size of the elk he needed to bring home. We currently have an elk that Cody's dad gave us that is huge! It is a 6x6, and I, jokingly, told him I couldn't really let him bring home anything smaller and hang in its place. Apparently he took my talk to heart because at the end of the very first day of hunting he shot a 7x8. It was one of the few they even saw. Just imagine how big the next one will have to be!! And talk about proud, I thought we talked a lot about elk hunting before, we are really talking about it now!!
Before
The boys and I wanted to see how much beard growth Cody had while hunting.
After
This is where they made camp. They had a base camp and then one up higher in the mountains. After base camp everywhere they went was either on foot or on horseback. That means that they had to pack everything they shot back down the mountain.
Cody said he shot him right about tree line, around 1150 ft up.
Cody managed to get him to within 30 ft to get his shot, and the poor guy (or poor Cody) almost ran off a cliff.
Cody and his prize!
It is a terrible thing to leave and go hunting in the mountains, no showers, no phone service...ok no showers is pretty bad, but look at the view!
Everyone was super excited for dad the elk to get home.
Comparing the two.
Hank loved his new toy!
Duke did too!
